In India, Preschool education primarily focuses on Intellectual skills such as Language/Literacy, mathematical skills and scientific skills. On the other hand, in USA, the preschool program is structured around the four key elements listed:
Social Development: Involves learning to interact with others
-Communicate with parents, teachers and peers.
-understand the feelings of others
-make new friends
-cooperate
-follow directions
Emotional Development: involves to understand and control own emotions
-express themselves
-understand their unique identities
-demonstrate self-control
-pay attention
Physical Skills:
-Gross-Motor Skills
-Fine-Motor Skills
-Body Awareness
-Personal Care
-Healthy Behavior
Intellectual Skills
-Language/Literacy
-Mathematics
-Science
-Social Studies
-Creative Arts,
The missing piece in Indian education is social, emotional and physical skills. These skills are considered to be the responsibility of parents and the society(people around the kids). If the kids doesn't have good parents and neighbors, they may not be able to learn these skills. I believe it's advisable to teach these skills in the schools.
Knowing the ABCs and 123s are not enough. To be prepared for school, children must be excited and curious about learning and confident that they can succeed. They must be able to understand the feelings of others, control their own feelings and behaviors, and get along with their peers and teachers. Indeed, these motivational and socio-emotional skills is more important to school success than being able to hold a pencil or read.
